This National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) Coding Tool has been developed to assist users with the correct coding of NS-SEC. NS-SEC is a measure of employment relations and conditions of occupations. These are central to showing the structure of socio-economic positions in modern societies and helping to explain variations in social behaviour and other social phenomena. If you do not know your SOC 2010 code it can found using Occupation Coding Tool or SOC 2010 Hierarchy:
In order to derive NS-SEC you will be asked a maximum of 3 questions. These questions will ask about your employment status and dependent on your answers also size of organisation and supervisor status. None of your answers are stored on any databases nor sent anywhere.
There are 3 methods to derive NS-SEC; these are the full, reduced, and simplified methods. The difference between these methods relates the information available to derive them. This NS-SEC Coding Tool will use the most appropriate methodology based on the information you provide. When you are presented with your NS-SEC information you will be presented with 2 pieces of information, an analytic class number, and an operational sub-category number. The operational sub-categories are subdivisions of the analytic class. For further information about the different derivation methods, analytic classes and operational categories, please refer to the NS-SEC user manual.
