Definitions

Data is provided by the Nomis Mortality Statistics dataset. This dataset provides mortality statistics for England and Wales, broken down by calendar year, sex and underlying cause of death (classified using ICD10, the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision).

Death statistics are compiled from information supplied when deaths are certified and registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement.

Other information

Age-standardised mortality rates per 100,000 population are standardised to the 2013 European Standard Population. Age-standardised rates are used to allow comparison between populations which may contain different proportions of people of different ages. More information on the calculation of age-standardised rates is available in our User Guide to Mortality Statistics.

Rates are suppressed when the number of deaths is less than 5 which is often the case when looking at mid-level super output area data or looking at detailed cause of death. The source data contains separate death rates per 100,000 population for England and for Wales, and death rates by cause of death which have not been included here. This is because in some instances the number of deaths are very small (less than 10), meaning the rate is statistically unreliable.
