This table provides metadata for the actual indicator available from UK statistics closest to the corresponding global SDG indicator. Please note that even when the global SDG indicator is fully available from UK statistics, this table should be consulted for information on national methodology and other UK-specific metadata information.

Definitions |
Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) - Sites contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. KBAs encompass Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas. Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity, identified using data on birds, of which more than 12,000 global sites have been identified. Whilst Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas are a good surrogate for general biodiversity, birds now comprise less than 50% of the species used to identify KBAs, expanding to mountain vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and ecosystem types. Mountain area - sites were classified as mountain Key Biodiversity Areas when ≥5% spatial overlap was observed between the Key Biodiversity Area polygons and a mountain raster layer, taken from the World Database on Protected Areas. Protected areas - Geographical spaces, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values, as defined by IUCN, 2008. Protected areas are documented in the World Database on Protected Areas. |

Calculations |
No calculations were performed in the data acquisition of this indicator as appropriate data was readily available in the final format specified by this indicator. For detail on calculations made prior to acquisition see the global metadata. |
Other information |
The list of protected area designations is given on the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT). Graphs of Protected area coverage of Key Biodiversity Areas are also available in the Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (BIP) Dashboard, and the IBAT UK country profile. Data follows the UN specification for this indicator. This indicator has been identified in collaboration with topic experts. |
