| Definitions |
Qualified - Teachers who have attained qualified teacher status (QTS). QTS is considered desirable for teachers in most schools in England. In some schools, including academies, free schools, and independent schools, QTS is not a legal requirement. Academies have a fundamental freedom to employ talented teachers who do not necessarily have QTS. Unqualified - An unqualified teacher is either a trainee working towards qualified teacher status (QTS); an overseas trained teacher who has not exceeded the four years they are allowed to teach without having QTS; or an instructor who has a particular skill who can be employed for so long as a qualified teacher is not available. Nursery - Children aged 2 to 4. Primary - Children aged 4 to11. Secondary - Children aged 11 to 16. |

Data is based on state-funded schools which includes - nursery, primary, secondary, pupil referral unit (PRU) and special schools, and teachers centrally employed by the local authority. Primary schools include both Primary academies and LA maintained primaries from the source publication. The proportion of qualified teachers includes both full and part time teachers. Please see the School Workforce in England - methodology for further methodological information.This indicator is being used as an approximation of the UN SDG Indicator. Where possible, we will work to identify or develop UK data to meet the global indicator specification. This indicator has been identified in collaboration with topic experts. |
